A. Answer: These are excellent questions. The present thinking in this manner is that one has to “want” help to gain the ability to truly get one’s addiction under control. Often this takes place when one hits “rock bottom” or “bottoms out.” The definition of “bottom” is variable. Some people hit their bottom when an adequate threat to their independence is made, or an event takes place that it is frightening, life changing, or otherwise devastating. Some people however must actually go to rock bottom, leaving family, possessions, employment, and/or relationships before they realize that it is their addiction that is contributing in a great way to these losses. The key is to believe in a full way that the cessation of use/activity is more beneficial than the continuation of use or activity. This must not be temporary in order to obtain an experienced progress. If one feels that using/doing an activity is not bad enough to quit, one will likely not quit. This is a simple example of cost/risk-benefit analysis.
